Domain Negentropy – Cigar Review

Domain Negentropy Prelight

Domain Cigars launched in 2023 as a collaborative venture between Daniel Lance and Esteban Disla. Domain is one of the few and the newest vertically integrated cigar companies on the market today. That means that Lance and Disla can oversee each step in the process, from seed to smoke. Domain ferments their tobaccos in the exclusive “Despanic Process,” where specific groupings of tobaccos can inoculate each other with particular oils and flavors.

Domain released Negentropy in April 2024, along with the Neutron, as their first cigars on the market. The Negentropy is available in an impressive nine different vitolas: a 6×50 Toro, 6×56 Box Pressed Toro, 6×60 “Simulation” Gordo, 5×56 Robusto Gordo, 5×52 Robusto Extra, 4×52 “Relevant” Petit Robusto, 5×54 “His Excellency” Shaggy Belicoso, and a 4.5×60 “Neural Plasticity” Petit Gordo. The blend details include an AAA Ecuadorian Habano Wrapper sourced from Oliva Tobacco, as well as binder and Filler tobaccos from the Disla farm in Condega, Nicaragua. The Tabacalera Familia Disla S.A. handles the production under Estaban Disla’s watchful eye.

The wrapper is a dark brown with a medium oiliness and an exceptionally toothy texture. This is the Toro vitola at 50 ring gauge, but it appears to be thinner. The aromas are of hay and black tea. The draw is slightly snug, with notes of hay and rich, earthy aromas on the cold draw.

Domain Negentropy First Third

The Negentropy starts with an excellent smoke output and a rich, earthy flavor profile. I’m picking up notes of rustic bread, dry cocoa, old wood, and rich earth on the palate. The retrohale has notes of dark brown sugar, black tea (perhaps Pu-erh?), and a hint of black pepper. The strength of flavor is full. The ash, burn, and construction are fantastic. The finish is medium-plus with notes of black tea and brown sugar.

Domain Negentropy Second Third

The palate has notes of whole wheat bread, dry cocoa, old wood, and popcorn. The retrohale shows notes of black tea, molasses, nutmeg, and a hint of mace. The strength of flavor has receded to medium plus. The cigar required one touch-up after it ashed, but the ash and construction have been excellent otherwise. The smoke output is fantastic. The finish is medium-plus with notes of black tea and earth.

Domain Negentropy Final Third

I’m seeing notes of black bread, leather, and musty hickory on the palate. The flavors on the retrohale have simplified to molasses and black tea. The strength of flavor remains at a medium-plus level. The smoke output is still fantastic. The cigar required one additional touch-up, but the ash and construction remained excellent. The finish is long with notes of hickory and black tea. The flavors continued to simplify after the band, and I put the Negentropy down with just under an inch remaining.

Domain Negentropy Conclusions

The Domain Negentropy stands out in its ability to be both delicately elegant and intensely flavorful. I found the flavor profile to be rich, captivating, and exceptionally blended. While the cigar did have some minor combustion issues, I thoroughly enjoyed smoking the Negentropy. At $12, the Negentropy is punching well above its weight class and offers some significant value. Daniel Lance and Esteban Disla are doing some stellar work, and I’m excited to explore the rest of their catalog, as well as their future releases. If you’re into rich, full-bodied blends but also appreciate some nuance and novelty, you should give the Domain Negentropy a try.
