I really wanted to review this stick as it’s not only one of my favorites, but in my mind a real sleeper in the modern Cuban collection. It doesn’t have the big cherry note that most people look for in Romeo y Julieta, it’s a tubo, and it can be easily had for ~$10. So, this one really gets overlooked, and I’m here to tell you why you should smoke it.

The draw on this one was a bit tighter than I’d like, however it was definitely still smokable, and no Perfecdraw needed. I also have to mention how gorgeous this wrapper was – so toothy! The flavor profile starts off with some really pleasant light roast black coffee, and sweet tea biscuits. I get some of that really nice brightness on the retro as well. Is that the “Cuban twang” I hear so much about?

So the blend is definitely kicking in here. I’m getting some rosewater, and sweet fennel. I know some people don’t love that Anise flavor, but I’m a HUGE fan. The lighter puffs really showcase the complexity of this blend, so I’m happy to take my time with it.

Big transitions here at the half point. The main flavor profile is now a sweet dark chocolate, and a bitter sage. If any of you have a superstitious aunt who burned a lot of sage, you know exactly what this smells like. The profile is definitely more bitter/dark at this point, but the complexity is keeping me more than interested. There is still a touch of the fennel sweetness dipping in and out, and the brightness is there but fading slowly.

This particular box is pushing on 6 years old, and I’ve smoked about half way through it. I don’t know if I got lucky with this particular box, but for a cigar of this size, and at this price point I think it’s an incredible value. There are only 2 other cigars I can think of that delivered that sage note – a 2019 Trinidad Fundadores, and a Crowned Heads Four Kicks Capa Especial in Lancero. I can see this not being everyone’s cup of tea, but it really works for me. As I said in the opening this is one of those Cubans that are actually readily available on all of those websites we know and love. Buy them while you still can!
