The Tabernacle David CT Broadleaf by Foundation – A Review

It was a pretty miserable day today in New York, so we decided to head over to the iconic Davidoff Of Geneva in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. I actually went in to try the new Highclere Castle Senetjer, but it sold out overnight…Thankfully they have some awesome stock, and I decided on the David after a few looks around the shop.

The draw on this was remarkably open, almost too open for me. I usually prefer a bit of resistance, and usually perfectos are a bit on the tighter side of draw, but this one was wide open. Flavor started off with a subtle earthy sweetness, dark chocolate morsels, and stout. I also got bright black peppercorn notes on the retro.

Once the cigar got warmed up the real flavor profile really kicked in. The biggest note by far was a classic chocolate syrup, literally a spoonful of Hershey’s chocolate syrup – very very interesting! There was also some walnut, and a musty cocoa powder on the retro. There was still a touch of that brightness from the first third, but was playing second fiddle to the chocolate syrup flavor. The ash was a bit flakier than I’d like, but didn’t take away from the experience at all for me.

Right at the last third the chocolate syrup note started to dip down a bit. The dominant note was the musty cocoa powder, along with some floral spice, and some charred oak in the background. The syrup was coming in and out puff by puff. The smoke got particularly dry at this point as well – it really reminded me of a tannic wine actually.

This was a fun little cigar. There isn’t a lot of CT Broadleaf in my humi right now, but I can definitely see that changing with blends like these. For people who’re into those dessert notes, I think you’d love this cigar. Personally, it’s something I’d have to be in the mood for. This is one of those sticks that I think would go great with a beverage pairing – maybe a nice stout, or a spiced rum? Both to play off of those chocolate notes, and to help with the dry smoke. I have one more of these in the humidor, so I’ll definitely break out a bottle next time I light it up.
